Bored of the Miss-goody-two-shoes hairstyle and longing for a change? We dare you to try the punk

Punk hairstyle is not merely styling your hair, but an expression of your individuality. It’s a statement you make about your carea-damn attitude. It is uninhibited, mysterious, and dark as also loud, brash, and fun. It is liberating. Emo, Goth, scene; they are all part of punk. Punk is not just a style, but also an attitude influenced by cultures, art and music.
To say that punk hairstyles are attention-grabbing is an understatement. They are meant to be that way. Bold and outrageous and you will get more than a fair share of stares (some appreciating and some from horrified aunties). So, you must be comfortable with yourself.

POPULAR PUNK HAIR COLOURS

1 Because they scream individuality, punk hair colours are always on the bolder side. Think loud, outrageous colours and unusual pairings.

2 Steer clear of natural colours. Colour your hair in a bold shade for an instant punk-me-up.

3 The placement of the colour is as important as the choice of colour. Punk hair colour goes beyond the regular highlights. Application must be such that it stands out.

4 Accentuate your punk style by colouring only your bangs or a thick section of your hair or the mohawk.

5 Try dip-dyed ends like red, flaming orange, strawberry pink or acid green with a layered, choppy hairstyle.
6 Jazz up your hair in different hues of the rainbow for an interesting, eyeball-grabbing effect — blue, green, purple and pink hues in pastel, fluorescent, or neon shades like bright orange, vivid red, and bright white.

7 While going for the emo look, go for colours that are less on the funkier side and more on the darker side. Goth hair is almost always dark.

So, what makes emo different from punk? We ask the experts Dharmesh Hingorrani
(Dodo):
An emo look can be defined as a sharp, edgy look with a lot of funk. It’s a little on the gothic side. An emo look is not just about the hair cut, hairstyle and colour. It’s a complete look with the darkkohled eyes, the skinny fit pants, et al. Vibrant blues, greens, reds, pinks, orange and even purple are the preferred colours for an emo look. The cuts are sharp and crazy. Hence, a person going for the emo look won’t go for a sky blue, but an indigo blue.

Natasha Naegamvala: Radical and something that not anybody and everybody can wear or carry off is how I’d define the emo look. It is generally an aggresive, attention-seeking style statement, be it in the hairstyle or clothes. Ideally bright, loud, screaming colours are used for the look. The mohawk is a classic example. Partially shaved heads, disconnected layers, long fringes while keeping the rest of the hair short and spiky are some of the emo hairstyles.
Emo is a clan of sorts and India seems to have virtually none, or very few if at all. We have a gentler approach to these looks. For example, to take the aggresive look and use it to maybe give movment at the crown, or a long disconnected fringe.

POPULAR PUNK HAIRSTYLES

1. RIHANNA PUNK: Think Rihanna’s current side-shaven look. Shaved sides and bi-tonal hair is a classic punk look

2. SPIKES: The easiest way to punk it up is to add spikes to your look. You don’t need to cut your hair or undergo a major rehaul. Just grab some gel that has a great styling and holding power and go crazy making your crown stand up in spikes.

3. DREADHAWK: This is more like a variation of the Mohawk rather than a style by itself.
Instead of having the hair spiked like in a Mohawk, you get them dreadlocked.

4. MOHAWK: Worn by many tribes in North America in the early ages, this is one style that is synonymous with punk. Both sides of the head are sheared off, leaving the centre as it is. You can then use some super hold styling gel to fashion the hair in the centre into spikes. Very, very high maintainance, the look requires your spikes to hold up most of the time
and regular shaving/trimming of the sides. Also, growing out of this style can prove a bit of a challenge.

5. CHELSEA CUT: This hairstyle demands a completely shaven head leaving just the fringes as they are. You can then wear your fringes faceframing or sideswept. You might also go for a skinhead length instead of shaving your hair down to the roots. The look is asymmetrical. Who said punk was anything but radical!
