Three years post Pune blast, German Bakery reopens its doors

Pune’s famous German Bakery that was reduced to rubble on February 13, 2010, when a bomb ripped through it, has finally opened its doors. Its patrons see it as a symbol of resilience, just the way Mumbai saw Leopold Café, which opened four days after the 26/11 terror attack in 2008.
German Bakery will, however, take 20 days to be fully functional. While the owners have put together the same décor, the menu will see some additions. And this time, they are also looking into security measures. “We are
determined to not be affected by those who believe in spreading terror,” says Snehal Kharose, who runs the bakery along with her mother Smita. “We are as happy as our patrons. It’s only due to the support of our well-wishers that we could conquer all obstacles,” she adds.
The bakery, located near the Jewish Chabad House and the Osho International Meditation Resort in Koregaon Park, was a popular hangout for locals and tourists. It was destroyed in a blast that killed 17 and left 64 injured.
