Director Sudhir Mishra on his film Inkaar

It has sex and the struggle for power, and it mirrors the reality of today’s society. Director Sudhir Mishra’s next, Inkaar, a bold and realistic film set in a modern Indian office, is an urban story of power politics between a man and a woman. Told through its protagonists Maya (Chitrangda Singh) and Rahul (Arjun Rampal) and their careers in an advertising firm, the movie, says Mishra, “is something that every working person will relate to. It’s not just about a corporate office in Mumbai or a government department in Lucknow, everyone will identify with it. Be it the faceoff between a man or a woman, the struggle between a protégé and a mentor, the competition and aggression that women have to face from their female colleagues — all of these are part of the film.”

Sudhir adds that Arjun and Chitrangda are perfect for the film. “I feel this is Arjun’s best performance and that Chitrangda is back to doing what she does best. Their physical chemistry is explosive, but the sensuous part of the movie is not for titilation.” So intent was Mishra on keeping the story realistic that he also made Arjun and Chitrangda go through the entire movie 24 times. “We rehearsed till I was certain we had got it right,” says Mishra.
The producers have come up with a unique campaign. The actors will promote the movie separately and against each other’s characters.
Inkaar, produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures, releases January 18.
