Daaru, hookah songs hot in Bollywood
The
uninhibited, carefree, free-spirited and living-in-the- moment
generation have reason to rejoice. Their philosophy is reflected in
Bollywood songs now —be it a Chikni Chameli having a ‘pauvah’ to entice a
man, or young hearts getting ‘talli’ or a young lover comparing his
love to a ‘hookah bar’ or ‘desi daaru’.
Often films have shown
the lead pair celebrating life, friendship or even love over a crazy
drinking binge. Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan went for a mad ride in Mere
Brother Ki Dulhan, Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri bonded over desi daaru
in Rockstar, while Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor went bar-hopping in
Vegas in Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. The inhibited portrayal of the use of
alcohol is now a thing of the past. Lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya says,
“Words like sharaab, maikhana, nasha, etc have always been there, now
the terminology has changed according to the contemporary lingo. As far
as non-film music is concerned, it becomes the choice of the artiste.”
The
shift is pretty obvious. In earlier films, the lead actor who had lost
in love would drown his sorrows in alcohol. Of late, youngsters sharing
some close moments over a couple of drinks in a pub is uber-cool and
acceptable.
